What Is ‘Slow Journalism’?
(Excerpt from National Geographic article by Matt Norman)
"Speed is the disease of the digital age. In today’s newsrooms, pressure to publish stories at an increasingly fast rate often means that reporters are able to uncover only basic information and complete a surface-level analysis. Twenty years ago media experts were already warning that working at high speeds encourages journalists “to fall back on well-worn themes and observations—interpretive clichés.” In today’s world of digital media, this effect has been compounded." Read the full article here, "What is 'Slow Journalism'?" about the importance of "Slow Journalism" and think about how your K-12+ students could get involved. |
Out of Eden Walk: An Introduction for Educators
|
The Out of Eden Walk is a multi-year journalism project by National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek. Paul is walking around the world, from east Africa to the southernmost tip of South America, in an effort to show us the big global stories of our time at a walker's pace of just three miles per hour. Paul invites teachers and students to dig into the walk's rich journalism and investigate its ideas for themselves. To learn more, visit pulitzercenter.org/education.
